Chi Manifestation Blog/14 Office Tips for Good Feng Shui

Most of us spend hours every single day working, whether that’s in a home office, a corner desk, or even at the kitchen table. The way your workspace feels has a huge influence on your energy, focus, and even how motivated you are to chase your goals.

That’s where Feng Shui comes in. This ancient practice is about arranging your surroundings so energy (chi) can flow freely, which ultimately improves your productivity and attracts more opportunities into your life.

Let’s explore 14 beginner-friendly tips to bring better flow and abundance into your office space.

1) Put Your Desk in the Command Position

In Feng Shui, the desk is the heart of your office. It’s where decisions are made and ideas are born. That’s why its placement matters so much. The “command position” means your desk should face the door at a slight angle, with a solid wall behind your chair. This setup gives you a clear view of who’s coming in while also offering a sense of security and stability.

Think of it this way: when your back is to a wall, it feels like you’ve got a mountain supporting you. That grounding energy allows you to feel more confident, focused, and ready to take on challenges. If moving your desk isn’t possible, a simple fix like placing a mirror so you can see the door reflection can still create that sense of command.

2) Bring Plants Into Your Office

Plants bring life force energy into your workspace. Living plants strengthen the wood element, which is all about growth, creativity, and resilience. Just as a plant naturally reaches toward the light, having one nearby can remind you to keep growing toward your goals.

If you’ve got the space, a large leafy plant like a fiddle leaf fig or a money tree near your desk is wonderful. If your space is tight, even a small jade plant, pothos, or a vase of fresh cut greens can uplift the room.

3) Light Up Your Workspace

Lighting sets the tone for your entire office. Brightness brings in yang energy - the active, vibrant energy that fuels motivation and creativity. Without enough light, a space feels heavy and draining, which makes it harder to stay focused.

If you’re lucky enough to have natural light, open those blinds or sheer curtains to let the sunshine in. For darker spaces, don’t settle for just one overhead light. Layer your lighting with a desk lamp, floor lamp, or even soft string lights. The goal is to create a space that feels alive, welcoming, and energizing every time you sit down to work.

4) Place Metal Objects on Your Desk (But Not Too Many)

The five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) all bring their own unique energy. Metal is associated with mental clarity, focus, and structure. A few subtle metal touches on your desk, like a sleek pen holder, paperclip tray, or a clock, can sharpen your focus and help you feel organized.

But use them in moderation! Too much metal energy can feel cold or overly critical. So the trick is to strike a balance. Pair metal with other elements (like wood from plants or earth tones in decor) to create a workspace that’s both sharp and inviting.

5) Work by a Window

Windows act as energy gateways, connecting you to the natural world outside. Sitting near one brings in fresh light and airflow, which helps chi move freely. Plus, glancing outside for a moment of “micro-rest” can reset your focus during long work hours.

If your desk can’t sit directly by a window, don’t worry. Just positioning it so you can see out of one, or keeping curtains open to let in brightness, still makes a huge difference. Even adding a picture of nature if your space is windowless can mimic that uplifting connection.

6) Hang an Inspiring Art Opposite Your Desk

If you don’t have a window view, art can act as your energy booster. Hang images, quotes, or paintings that make you feel motivated and joyful. Maybe it’s a picture of a place you’d love to travel to, a quote that inspires you, or colors that spark creativity.

What you look at throughout the day impacts how you feel. A bare or dull wall can drain energy, while uplifting visuals fuel positivity.

7) Separate Your Office From Your Bedroom

Bedrooms are for rest, not work. That’s because they carry yin energy (soft, quiet, restful), while an office thrives on yang energy (active, creative, alert). Mixing the two can leave you feeling restless at night and unfocused during the day.

If you must share the space, create boundaries. Put your desk in a closet nook, use a folding screen, or even set clear “work hours” where you pack away your laptop at the end of the day. This helps your mind switch gears, protecting both your sleep and your productivity.

8) Invest in a Good Chair

Your chair represents support, both literally and symbolically. A high-backed, sturdy chair is like a throne, reminding you of your strength and authority in your workspace. Sitting in a flimsy chair with no back support can make you feel less grounded and even physically drained.

Choosing a supportive chair is an investment not just for your posture, but for your Inner Feng Shui. It says: “I value myself enough to be supported while I create.” A comfortable, ergonomic chair will keep you energized and confident throughout the day.

9) Keep Clutter to a Minimum

Clutter clogs energy. When papers, cords, and random items pile up, chi gets stuck, and so does your focus. A messy desk often leads to a messy mind, making it harder to concentrate or feel motivated.

Clear surfaces allow energy (and ideas) to flow more freely. Try starting or ending each day by tidying your workspace, even just for five minutes. You’ll notice how much lighter and more spacious it feels, as though your office is breathing again!

10) Place Bookshelves Near Your Desk

Books carry wisdom and knowledge, and having them in your office symbolizes growth and learning. But here’s the catch: not every book adds positive energy. Holding on to outdated or heavy-feeling ones can actually weigh the space down.

Curate your collection to keep books that inspire, educate, or uplift you. Position your bookshelf near your desk so that knowledge feels within reach, supporting you energetically as you work.

11) Align Lounge Furniture With a Solid Wall

If you have space for a lounge chair or small sofa in your office, place it against a solid wall to create stability and a sense of security. This spot can then become a cozy retreat for brainstorming, reading, or casual chats.

However, you should prioritize putting your desk in this position before your sofa since you will most likely spend more time there. If there isn't space to put your sofa in a command position, you can hang a mirror on the wall opposite from it so you can have a clear view of the window or door behind you.

12) Keep Walkways Clear

Just like you need clear mental space to focus, your office needs clear physical space to let chi move freely. Cramming furniture into every corner or blocking pathways creates stuck energy that can leave you feeling blocked too.

Think of your office like a river. When the water flows smoothly, everything feels harmonious. Keep pathways open, avoid piles on the floor, and arrange furniture so you can move easily. Your mind will thank you for it.

13) Place a Low Storage Cabinet Under Your Window

Windows are natural energy portals, so blocking them with tall furniture cuts off light and flow. Instead, use low cabinets or storage benches under windows. This way, you maximize storage without sacrificing brightness or energy circulation. It’s a smart way to reduce visual clutter too.

14) Place Your Phone on the Left Side of Your Desk

In Feng Shui, the far-left area of your desk is linked to abundance and prosperity, also known as the “wealth corner.” Placing your phone here is like symbolically opening the door to new opportunities, clients, or financial success.

Even if you don’t take many calls, putting your phone (or any communication device) in this spot acts as a daily reminder that abundance is welcome in your life. It’s a small shift with a big energetic intention behind it.
