Most people try to think their way out of stress.
They analyse the problem. They make lists. They try harder.
And the more they try, the more scattered they feel.
Here is what is actually happening when you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or on edge: your chi is scattered. Your internal energy has drifted away from your body and is ricocheting around in your head, in worst-case scenarios, in the future.
Grounding is the skill of pulling it back.
It is not a meditation retreat. It is not a complicated ritual. It takes as little as one minute. And once you know how to do it, you will have something most people never find: the ability to settle yourself from the inside, on demand.
In this post, I want to share three grounding techniques I teach inside the Inner Feng Shui lessons at Chi Manifestation. Each one works differently, so you can pick the one that suits how you are built.

Imagine a tree. A really large one.
I visited New Zealand recently and stood beneath a Kauri called Tane Mahuta, the God of the Forest. It is estimated to be over a thousand years old, stands 45 metres tall, and has survived storms that flattened everything around it. What you cannot see in any photograph is how deep those roots go.
Your chi is like those roots.
When your inner chi is grounded, strong, and deep, life can throw weather at you. A difficult conversation, an unexpected bill, a comment that stings. The branches sway, but you do not fall.
When your chi is scattered, it takes almost nothing to knock you off balance. One passive-aggressive comment from a colleague ruins your whole afternoon. A minor inconvenience derails your week. You feel reactive, sensitive, and permanently on edge.
That is not a character flaw. That is an energy problem. And it is fixable.
Here are the three grounding techniques that I teach, and that I use myself.

You have been told to "just take a deep breath" your whole life. It turns out that advice is good, but it only works if you do it properly.
Most people, when they breathe under stress, take short, shallow breaths from the chest. This signals to your nervous system that something is wrong. Your body stays in a state of low-level alert.
The 4-7-8 breathwork interrupts that cycle. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is the part of your body responsible for calming you down. Your heart rate drops. Your muscles soften. Your chi starts returning to a balanced state.
Here is how to do it:
That is one cycle. Repeat as many times as you need until you feel your shoulders soften and your mind slow down.
You will know it is working when the noise in your head gets quieter. That is your chi settling back into your body.

A lot of anxiety is not really about what is happening now. It is about what might happen later, or what happened before.
When your mind races into the future or replays the past on a loop, your chi drifts with it. It leaves your body and gets caught up in stories that are not real yet, or already over.
The 5-4-3-2-1 mindfulness exercise yanks your attention back into the present moment. And when you are fully present, your chi stabilises almost immediately.
Here is how it works: you engage all five senses, in sequence.
This exercise works because your senses only exist in the present. You cannot smell the past. You cannot feel the texture of tomorrow. By anchoring your attention in what is physically real and happening right now, your nervous system relaxes and your chi follows.

When you are under stress, your energy rises.
You feel it in your chest tightening. Your thoughts racing. Your breathing becoming short and quick. Your energy is literally moving up and getting stuck in your head.
The waterfall visualisation reverses that. It gives the chaotic, scattered energy a path to flow downward and out.
Here is how to do it:
Sit or stand with your feet flat on the floor. Feel the solid surface beneath them.
Take a deep breath in and picture a waterfall flowing down from a rocky mountain. Now, as you exhale, imagine that same stream of energy flowing down through your own body: from the top of your head, down through your face, your jaw, your shoulders, your chest, your stomach, into your hips, your thighs, your calves, and finally out through the soles of your feet, flowing down into the earth below you.
As it flows out, imagine it carrying with it any tension, stress, or emotional heaviness you are ready to let go of.
The earth absorbs it. You do not need to hold it any more.
Even one minute of this visualisation can shift how you feel for the rest of your day. It is not magic. It is your nervous system being given a clear signal to release.

This lesson is one piece of a much larger picture.

Inner Feng Shui works layer by layer. Grounding is one of the foundational skills, because without it, no amount of outer work will stick. You can rearrange your furniture, set your intentions, and read every book on the law of attraction, but if your internal state is scattered, those efforts will produce scattered results.
This is why we teach both sides at Chi Manifestation. The physical environment has its own energy. When it is arranged correctly, it creates the conditions for luck and opportunity to flow toward you. But if your inner state is misaligned, if your chi is scattered, your beliefs are contracted, or your self-talk is working against you, those opportunities arrive and pass you by. Unnoticed. Or quietly sabotaged.
Lasting change requires both sides aligned. That is the principle behind the Inner and Outer Feng Shui System: a programme that combines over 5,000 years of ancient Chinese energetic wisdom with modern, science-backed psychology, developed by a second-generation Feng Shui master from Singapore and a certified psychotherapist and counsellor. Most programmes work on one side. This one works on both. Because one without the other only gets you halfway.

You do not need to master all three techniques. Pick one that feels natural to you and use it for a few days.
The 4-7-8 breathwork is best when you need to calm down quickly and you have a quiet moment to yourself. The 5-4-3-2-1 mindfulness exercise works anywhere, including in a busy office or a crowded train. The waterfall visualisation is particularly powerful when you feel emotionally heavy and need to release something.
What matters is not which one you choose. What matters is that you choose something, and that you actually use it when life gets loud.
Because grounding is a skill. The more you practise it, the faster it works. And over time, you build the kind of inner stability that does not depend on everything around you going well.
Your chi stays rooted. Even when the wind picks up.
See you in the next one.
