Chi Manifestation Blog/Inner Feng Shui/The Culprit Behind Your Automatic Thoughts (And How to Quietly Weaken It)

You are not driven by your thoughts.

You are driven by something much deeper and much quieter, sitting underneath them. And until you see it, you will keep wondering why the same painful thoughts come back no matter how many times you try to think positive.

In an earlier lesson we looked at the Emotional Alchemy Framework. A quick recap, because it matters here. When a situation happens, the way you interpret it creates a thought. That thought decides the emotion you feel. The emotion becomes a sensation in your body. And that sensation shapes how you behave. We learnt to become the master of our emotions by intentionally changing the thought at the top of that chain.

Today we go one level deeper. Because there is something underneath your thoughts that is generating them automatically, before you have even had a chance to choose. And once you can see it, you can start to loosen its grip.

Meet Your Core Beliefs

The culprit is your core beliefs.

A core belief is the deepest conclusion you have reached about yourself, about other people, or about the world. Most of them formed early in life, often in moments when you had very little power, choice, or perspective. A child makes sense of a painful experience the only way a child can, and that meaning hardens into a rule about how things are.

Here is what makes them so powerful. Because they have been with you for so long, they no longer feel like beliefs at all. They feel like plain fact. Like gravity. And because they feel so obviously true, you almost never stop to question them. You just let them run your life quietly in the background.

Core beliefs fall into three categories. Beliefs about the Self, which are about how worthy, lovable, or capable you feel deep down, especially when things go wrong. Beliefs about Others, which are about whether people are trustworthy and supportive, or unreliable and unsafe. And beliefs about the World, which are about whether life feels fair or unfair, safe or dangerous, and whether good things are even allowed to last.

Inside each of those categories, the same four themes tend to appear. Helplessness, where deep down you feel you cannot cope or are not in control. Unlovability, where you feel you are not quite enough to be fully accepted. Worthlessness, where your value feels conditional and easily dismissed. And hostility or danger, where the world, other people, or even you yourself feel unsafe.

How Core Beliefs Show Up in Everyday Life

The easiest way to recognise a core belief is to watch the automatic thought it produces. As you read these examples, you may notice one or two that sound familiar, either in you or in someone close to you. If that happens, there is no need for judgement or self-criticism. Just notice it. Awareness is the whole aim here.

Start with beliefs about the Self. Someone carrying the belief "I am not capable" tends to think, the moment a big task lands, "I cannot handle this project, I will probably mess it up." Someone with "I am not lovable" thinks, "if they really knew me, they would leave." Someone with "I am incompetent" thinks, "this is too hard, I will never manage to start that side hustle." And someone with "I am a target" thinks, "they were talking about me, and they are just waiting for me to leave so they can carry on."

Notice how emotional these thoughts are. And notice that to the person having them, they do not feel like thoughts at all. They feel like facts. That is precisely why they go unchallenged.

Now beliefs about Others. "People will not support me" produces "I am on my own when things get hard." "People always leave" produces "they are going to abandon me." "People do not value me" produces "they do not take me seriously." And "people will hurt me" produces "I should not trust them." You can see how quietly these shape the way someone shows up in every relationship they have.

And finally, beliefs about the World. "Life is out of my control" produces "nothing I do makes a difference." "Good relationships do not last" produces "I should not get too comfortable." "The world rewards everyone but me" produces "people like me do not succeed." And "the world is unsafe" produces "something bad is about to happen."

Sitting quietly in the background, these beliefs are constantly shaping your automatic thoughts, your emotions, and your behaviour. And every draining thought they produce causes your inner chi to contract a little more.

A Gentle Warning Before We Begin

Before I show you the process, I want to be clear about one thing, because it matters.

We are not trying to erase your core beliefs overnight. That is not going to happen, and chasing it will only frustrate you. Some of these beliefs have been with you for forty, fifty, even sixty years. They are not going to vanish in a single journalling session.

That is not the goal. The goal is far kinder and far more realistic. We simply want to become aware of the unhelpful beliefs that have been contracting your chi for most of your life, and then weaken them, just a little. A belief that used to run at full strength, softened even slightly, has noticeably less power over your thoughts. Do this consistently and, over time, those old beliefs slowly lose their grip. That is the whole aim. Small, steady loosening. Not a dramatic overnight rescue.

The Cognitive Chi Realignment Process, Step One: Identify

The first step is to find out what your core beliefs actually are. And the most powerful tool for that is journalling.

Here is how to do it. Whenever you notice yourself getting emotionally triggered in a negative way, pause and note down four things. What was the situation that just happened? What were you thinking in that moment? Which category does it fall under, Self, Others, or the World? And which theme does it match, helplessness, unlovability, worthlessness, or danger?

An example. Your boss assigns you an important project. Almost instantly you start doubting whether you can handle it, and the thought "what if I mess this up?" appears. That thought falls under the Self category, and specifically the theme of helplessness.

Now, something very important. Do not jump to conclusions. Having one negative thought in one situation does not mean you have uncovered a core belief. Everyone doubts themselves from time to time. That is just being human. What you are looking for is a recurring pattern across different situations.

So in that example, if the same self-doubt shows up not only at work, but also when you try something new, speak up in a meeting, make a decision, or face something unfamiliar, then that is a pattern worth paying attention to. Over weeks of journalling, you start to notice that many different situations keep triggering the same kind of thought. That is when a core belief begins to reveal itself. It is not about catching yourself once. It is about noticing, "this story keeps coming back, there is probably something underneath it."

Step Two: Weaken It With Evidence For and Against

Once you have identified an unhelpful core belief, the second step is to put it on trial. And you do this by gathering evidence on both sides.

Stay with the same example. Your boss hands you an important project and you immediately think, "I am not capable enough to handle this." On the same journal page, draw a line straight down the middle. On one side write Evidence For. On the other write Evidence Against.

Under Evidence For, honestly note the moments that seem to support the belief that you are incapable. A project that once did not go to plan. A time back in school when you studied hard and still did poorly. Let it be honest. You are not trying to win by cheating.

Then, under Evidence Against, note the moments where you actually handled things well. Times you coped with pressure better than you expected. Times you learned as you went along. Times you finished something even though you doubted yourself at the start. Really search for these, because your brain will not offer them up easily.

When you step back and look at the two columns, something becomes clear. While the belief "I am incapable" was true at a few points in your life, it is not one hundred per cent true. There were plenty of times you were more than capable. You simply overlooked them, because of a quirk in the brain called negativity bias, which makes threatening and negative information stick far more easily than positive information. Your mind held tightly to the failures and quietly let the wins slip away.

This is why the exercise works. Each time you do it, you gently remind your mind of the evidence it has been ignoring. The belief does not shatter dramatically. It just gets a little weaker. Do it again next time, and a little weaker still. Bit by bit, it loses its power to drive your thoughts, and your inner chi gets to expand into the space it leaves behind.

Weakening an old core belief is some of the most important inner work you will ever do. And it is one half of a bigger picture.

Inside Chi Manifestation, this belief work is one part of a complete system. On its own, loosening a limiting belief lifts a weight off your thinking. Combined with everything else we teach, it becomes the foundation for a genuinely different way of living.

Here is why both sides are needed. Your physical environment carries its own energetic charge. Arranged well, it creates the conditions for luck and opportunity to flow toward you. But if your inner state is still ruled by old beliefs that whisper "people like me do not succeed" or "something bad is about to happen," those opportunities arrive and pass right by. Unnoticed, or quietly sabotaged before they can take root. You can set your space up perfectly and still block what it sends you, simply because your inner world is not ready to receive it.

That is the argument at the heart of the Inner and Outer Feng Shui System. It brings together over 5,000 years of ancient Chinese energetic wisdom with modern, science-backed psychology, developed by a second-generation Feng Shui master from Singapore and a certified psychotherapist and counsellor. Most programmes work on one side. This one works on both. Because one without the other only gets you halfway.

Start Small, Start This Week

You do not need to fix your whole inner world by Friday. That is not the assignment.

This week, just start noticing. The next time you feel a sharp emotional trigger, pause and jot down the situation, the thought, the category, and the theme. Do not analyse it to death. Just capture it. After a couple of weeks, read back over what you wrote and look for the story that keeps returning. That is your core belief, stepping out of the shadows.

Then, when you are ready, put it on trial. Draw the line down the middle and gather your evidence, honestly, on both sides. You will almost certainly find that the belief you have carried as absolute truth was never the whole story.

That is how the deepest change happens. Not with a single dramatic breakthrough, but with a quiet, patient loosening of the beliefs that have been squeezing your chi for years. Be gentle with yourself as you do it. You are working with parts of you that have been there a very long time.

See you in the next one.
