Chi Manifestation Blog/Inner Feng Shui/You Cannot Control What Happens. You Can Control This.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." — Viktor Frankl

Most people believe they have no real control over how they feel.

Something happens. A rude comment. A rejection. A message that goes unanswered. And before you even register it consciously, a wave of anger or hurt or anxiety is already moving through you.

It feels automatic. Inevitable.

And because it feels that way, most people assume it is that way.

But Viktor Frankl figured something out while surviving a Nazi concentration camp, arguably one of the most extreme circumstances a human being can endure. Between the thing that happens to you and how you respond, there is a gap. A moment of space. And in that space, you have more power than you think.

This is what I call the Emotional Alchemy Framework. And once you understand it, it changes how every single situation affects you.

Where Emotions Actually Come From

Here is what most people believe: a situation creates an emotion.

"He shouted at me, so I got angry."

"She ignored my message, so I felt hurt."

"My boss called me in for a meeting, so I became anxious."

Sounds reasonable. But if situations automatically created emotions, then everyone who experienced the same situation would feel the same thing. And that simply does not happen.

Think about two employees who both receive a D rating in their annual performance review. One spirals into fear, convinced this is going to cost him his job. The other feels grateful, because now she knows exactly what to work on.

Same situation. Completely different emotional outcomes.

So what is the actual difference?

It is the thought that comes between the situation and the emotion. The meaning you give to what just happened. The interpretation your mind reaches for before the emotion has even formed.

This is the Emotional Alchemy Framework:

Situation → Thought → Emotion → Body Sensation → Behaviour

A situation happens. Your interpretation of that situation creates a thought. That thought produces an emotion. The emotion registers in your body as a physical sensation. And the sensation influences how you behave.

The situation is often outside your control. The thought is not.

The Emotional Alchemy Reset Exercise

Let me walk you through this with an example almost everyone has experienced.

You send someone a message. You can see they have read it. No reply.

In that moment, your mind reaches for a thought. And depending on which thought it reaches for, your entire experience of the next hour changes.

Path 1: Disappointed and hurt

Your mind goes to: "Maybe I said something wrong." Or: "Maybe I'm not important to them." Or: "She's probably not interested."

Those thoughts produce feelings of disappointment or hurt. Your stomach turns sour. Your shoulders tense. Your breathing becomes shallow. And you spend the next twenty minutes re-reading the message, trying to figure out what you did, mood soured for the rest of the afternoon.

Path 2: Neutral

Your mind goes to: "They are probably tied up with something right now."

You feel nothing much. Normal, relaxed. Your breathing stays steady. You put the phone down and carry on with your day.

Path 3: Actually fine with it

Your mind goes to: "Ha. No reply. Good. Some peace and quiet."

You feel a small lift. A little burst of energy. You go find something that makes you happy.

The message did not change. The situation is identical in all three paths. The only thing that changed is the thought your mind attached to it. And that one change rewrote the entire rest of your afternoon.

How to Use This in Real Life

This framework becomes practical when you use it on real situations, not hypothetical ones.

Think of something that happened recently that made you feel bad. A conversation that went sideways. A plan that collapsed. A person who let you down. Something that is still sitting with you.

Step 1: Name the emotion.

What did you feel? Angry? Hurt? Anxious? Disappointed? Be specific. The more honest you are here, the more useful the exercise.

Step 2: Trace it back to the thought.

What were you telling yourself that created that feeling? Most of the time this takes a moment of genuine honesty. The thought might be "I'm not respected." Or "Things never work out for me." Or "I must have done something wrong." Whatever it is, write it down.

Step 3: Notice what happened in your body.

Where did the emotion land? Your chest? Your gut? Your shoulders? Body sensations are real data. They tell you how deeply a thought has taken hold.

Step 4: Look at what you did next.

Did you withdraw? Snap at someone? Avoid the problem? Overwork to compensate? Behaviour is where the thought-emotion chain has its real-world impact.

Step 5: Choose the second thought.

You cannot always control the first thought your mind reaches for. It happens too fast. But you can always pause and choose the second one. What is a thought about this situation that is still honest, but less destructive? Not forced positivity. Something real that shifts the interpretation even slightly.

That is where the alchemy happens.

You Have More Control Than You Think

This is why two people can go through the same experience and come out of it completely differently.

It is not luck. It is not personality. It is the thought they habitually reach for when something happens.

The more you practise noticing your thoughts before they collapse into emotions, the more space you create. And in that space, you have choice.

Frankl found that space in a concentration camp. You can find it in an unreturned message.

It takes practice. But so does everything worth having.

The ability to intercept an emotion before it controls your day is one of the most important skills in Inner Feng Shui.

But inner work is only one half of the picture.

Your physical environment also carries an energetic charge. The direction your bed faces, the flow of energy through your home, the arrangement of your workspace. When these are set up correctly according to ancient Feng Shui principles, the conditions for opportunity, health, and abundance to reach you improve significantly.

The problem is this: even a perfectly optimised outer environment cannot fully work for you if your inner state is misaligned. Contracted emotions, installed self-sabotage patterns, and negative self-talk mean that when opportunity arrives, it passes right by. Unnoticed. Or quietly pushed away before it can land.

Lasting change requires both sides aligned. That is why the Inner and Outer Feng Shui System combines over 5,000 years of ancient Chinese energetic wisdom with modern, science-backed psychology, developed by a second-generation Feng Shui master from Singapore and a certified psychotherapist and counsellor. Most programmes work on one side. This one works on both. Because one without the other only gets you halfway.

The Takeaway

Emotions feel automatic because they move fast. But they are not automatic. Between what happens and how you respond, there is always a gap.

That gap is where your power lives.

Use the Emotional Alchemy Framework on real situations. Trace your emotions back to the thoughts that created them. Notice where those thoughts land in your body. And practise choosing the second thought, the one that is still honest but less destructive.

You cannot always change what happens to you. But you can always change the thought you reach for next. And that changes everything downstream.

See you in the next one.
