Emma had been single for four years.
She was not waiting passively. She went out, she tried the apps, she said yes to introductions from friends. She was ready. She had done the internal work, or as much of it as she could identify. But relationships never seemed to progress past the early stages. Something always intervened before things could take hold.
On the advice of a friend, she agreed to have a Feng Shui consultation. The consultant asked to see the southwest corner of her flat before looking at anything else.
What she found there: a home gym. A rowing machine, a set of kettle bells, and two metal weight racks. Grey walls. A single overhead strip light. No softness anywhere in the space, no warmth, no pairs of anything, and a corner dominated entirely by Metal element, the very energy that in Feng Shui controls and suppresses the Earth it sits in the relationship sector.
Emma repurposed the gym into a spare room, added soft furnishings in peach and blush tones, placed two rose quartz crystals on a shelf, and hung a piece of artwork featuring two birds. Within three months, she met someone. They are still together.

In the Bagua Map, the southwest corresponds to the Kun trigram, translated as "the receptive" or "earth." Its element is Earth. Its life area is love, marriage, partnerships, and the quality of intimate connection.
The Kun trigram represents yin energy in its most complete form: open, nurturing, receiving, and sustaining. In Feng Shui terms, this translates as the sector of the home most responsible for drawing in partnership energy and maintaining the warmth and stability of existing relationships.
The southwest is not only about romantic love. It also governs the quality of your closest friendships, your relationship with your mother, and any significant partnership in your life. When the sector is clear and well-activated, connection of all kinds tends to feel easier and more natural.
Using the Bagua Map, the career sector is located at the far-right corner of the home, regardless of compass direction.
The southwest belongs to Earth. Activating it means reinforcing the Earth element through colour, material, shape, and symbolic content.
Colours: Pink, peach, blush, rose, terracotta, warm yellow, and all soft warm tones. These do not need to dominate the room — a cushion, a set of candles, or a piece of artwork in these tones is enough to begin.
Materials: Ceramics, natural crystals (particularly rose quartz and amethyst), clay, stone, and soft natural textiles. Heavy, warm, grounded objects carry Earth energy.
Shapes: Square, low, and flat. Solid, stable pieces of furniture with a grounded quality work well in this corner.

The most important principle for the southwest is pairs. Whatever you place here should appear in twos. Single items in the love corner are said to reinforce aloneness. Two matching candles, two crystals, a piece of artwork featuring two figures or two birds, two flowers in a vase — the pairing reinforces the energy of partnership.
Rose quartz. The stone most widely associated with love energy across both Eastern and Western traditions. Place two pieces together, ideally matching in size and shape.
Amethyst. Deeply purifying and associated with emotional clarity. Useful in the love corner to clear residual heartache or energetic patterns from previous relationships.
Matching candles. Two candles of the same colour (preferably pink, red, or peach) add Fire element, which generates Earth in the Generating Cycle, providing additional nourishment to the sector.
Paired birds, figurines, or artwork. In Chinese tradition, mandarin ducks are the most auspicious love symbol. A pair of any birds, or any artwork depicting connection, partnership, or two beings in harmony, works well here.
Certain placements work directly against the southwest sector's function:
The approach to the southwest sector differs slightly depending on your intention.
For attracting new love: Focus on clearing and activating. Remove anything from the corner that represents your single status — equipment used only by one person, artwork featuring solitary figures, a single chair. Replace with paired objects and warm activating colours.
For deepening an existing relationship: Focus on softness and warmth. Add something that represents the specific quality you want to cultivate: a photograph of a meaningful moment together, a crystal associated with emotional healing or deepening intimacy, or a new piece of artwork chosen together.
The southwest sector can open a door. But you still have to walk through it.
If there are beliefs about love and partnership that have not been examined, beliefs like "relationships always end in pain," or "I'm not the kind of person people stay with," those patterns tend to filter even the best Feng Shui work. The external environment creates conditions. Your internal alignment determines whether you can fully receive what those conditions make available.
Both matter. Neither is sufficient alone.
The Chi Prosperity Fortune Lions are designed to be placed in pairs, the male and female working as a unit. In the love corner, this pairing carries additional significance: the male lion (ball under paw) grounds and stabilises incoming energy, while the female lion (cub under paw) nurtures and draws in what is beneficial. Together, they represent the complementary energies of a balanced partnership.
Place the Chi Prosperity Fortune Lions in the southwest sector of your home, on a shelf or low surface, with both lions facing inward toward the room. They create an energetic guardian framework for the love corner, protecting the warmth and stability of what you are building there while drawing in what has not yet arrived.

The southwest sector of your home is not a passive corner. It is an active energetic space that shapes the conditions available to you for love, partnership, and connection.
If that corner is cold, Metal-dominated, cluttered, or filled with single objects, you are working against yourself. A few deliberate changes — pairs of objects, warm earthy tones, soft materials, and at least one intentional symbol of partnership — can shift the conditions significantly.
