Chi Manifestation Blog/Feng Shui Tips for Beginners

Welcome to your starting point for creating better energy flow, not just in your home, but in your whole life. Let’s start with the five elements: Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire. These aren’t just fancy words; they actually shape how energy moves through your home. The way you decorate, the colors you use, and even the materials in your space all connect back to these elements. When used with intention, they can either calm, energize, or balance the vibe of your rooms.

Ready for a few quick and easy Feng Shui tips? These little shifts can make a big difference:

  • The Five Elements: Think of your space as needing a bit of each element to stay in balance. For example, a splash of greenery (Wood), a cozy candle (Fire), or a ceramic vase (Earth) can help shift the energy.
  • Commanding Position: Place your bed, desk, or stove so you can see the entrance/door while using them. This gives your nervous system a sense of safety and control.
  • Main Entryway: Keep this area open and clutter-free because it’s where energy (and opportunity!) enters your life.
  • Living Room: Arrange your seating so people face each other comfortably, and try not to have chairs with their backs to the door.
  • Kitchen: A clean kitchen invites health and abundance. Bonus points for fresh fruits or herbs on the counter!
  • Bathroom: Keep the toilet seat and bathroom door closed to prevent good energy from “flushing away.”
  • Bedroom: Try not to store things under your bed. It can block restful, peaceful sleep energy from flowing freely.

These are super beginner-friendly changes you can make right away. As we go deeper, you’ll start to see how small tweaks in your space and your mindset can ripple out into all areas of your life.

The Five Elements

Feng shui uses the five-element system, which comes from Taoist philosophy. This system looks at the cycles of nature and how they work together to be in balance. The five elements are earth, metal, water, wood, and fire.

Think of how water feeds wood, wood fuels fire, fire turns to ash (earth), and so on. It’s a dance of balance, and in Feng Shui, we use this natural flow to create harmony in our homes and in ourselves.

Each element brings a different vibe into your space and into your life:

  • Earth gives you stability and support (think cozy, grounding energy).
  • Metal helps with clarity and focus.
  • Water adds flow, emotion, and intuition.
  • Wood brings growth, creativity, and new beginnings.
  • Fire lights things up it’s passion, inspiration, and visibility.

Here’s the cool part: You can “invite” these elements into your space with things like colors, shapes, textures, and materials. Want to feel more grounded? Add earthy tones and square shapes. Need more energy? Go for pops of red and triangular forms. It’s like designing your home to reflect the life you want.

Earth: The Element of Support & Self-Care

Earth energy is all about nourishment, boundaries, and feeling grounded. It helps you slow down, feel secure, and take care of yourself both physically and emotionally.

  • Colors: Yellow, orange, brown
  • Shapes: Squares and rectangles
  • Vibes: Grounding, cozy, nurturing
  • Enhancement Tip: Try a square yellow rug or a solid wooden desk to create a stable, comforting energy in your space.

Metal: The Element of Clarity & Joy

Metal energy brings precision, beauty, and mental clarity. It helps you cut through clutter (mental and physical), feel more organized, and connect with lightness and joy.

  • Colors: White, gray, metallics
  • Shapes: Circles and ovals
  • Vibes: Clean, bright, uplifting
  • Enhancement Tip: Add a round metallic planter or a shiny lamp to spark clarity and invite fresh ideas.

Water: The Element of Wisdom & Flow

Water energy connects you to your emotions, intuition, and deeper relationships with others and yourself. It brings calm, reflection, and helps you tap into your inner knowing.

  • Colors: Black, deep blue
  • Shapes: Wavy, flowing, asymmetrical
  • Vibes: Peaceful, introspective, connecting
  • Enhancement Tip: A small fountain or art with flowing water imagery brings in soothing water vibes. Bonus: it also helps with money flow, according to traditional Feng Shui!

Wood: The Element of Growth & Vitality

Wood energy is your personal springtime full of renewal, creativity, and upward momentum. It’s all about healing, progress, and bringing your ideas to life.

  • Colors: Green, teal, blue
  • Shapes: Tall, vertical, column-like
  • Vibes: Fresh, energizing, alive
  • Enhancement Tip: Houseplants are the easiest way to bring wood into your home — and they clean your air too! 🌱

Fire: The Element of Passion & Visibility

Fire energy brings spark, inspiration, and visibility. It helps you take up space, feel confident, and go after what lights you up.

  • Colors: Red, bright orange
  • Shapes: Triangles, stars
  • Vibes: Bold, energetic, magnetic
  • Enhancement Tip: A stylish lamp or a pop of red in your decor can instantly raise the energy and bring warmth to a space.

The Commanding Position

Let’s talk about one of the most fundamental basics in Feng Shui: The Commanding Position.

The truth is, how you place your bed, desk, and stove can totally change how you feel in your space, and how energy flows through your life.

Here’s why these three areas matter so much:

  • Your bed represents you your well-being, rest, and relationships.
  • Your stove represents wealth and nourishment both financial and physical.
  • Your desk reflects your career and your purpose or path in life.

When these items are in the commanding position, you feel more in control, confident, and at ease.

So what is this commanding position all about?
It's when you can see the main door to the room while you're lying in bed, working at your desk, or cooking at the stove, but you’re not directly in line with the door. Basically, you want a clear view of the entrance without being in the “line of fire” (like directly across from the door).

Why does this matter? On a deep, almost instinctual level, being able to see what’s coming into a space makes us feel safe and aware. That sense of peace invites opportunity to flow in more easily.

Tip
Once you’ve set up your commanding positions, amplify the positive energy by surrounding yourself with things that spark joy and calm. Think happy colors, favorite decor pieces, soft lighting, or a soothing plant. A little decluttering and natural light also go a long way in keeping that energy fresh and flowing.

Your Main Door

Your entryway is the Mouth of Chi, where all the energy flows into your home. Think of it as your home’s and your own first impression of the world.

Because this is where energy arrives, keeping your entry clear and clutter-free is a big deal. If stuff piles up here, energy gets stuck before it even has a chance to move through your home.

Also, make sure your front door is easy to find and easy to open. It should feel inviting and accessible, whether it’s your friends coming over or delivery folks dropping off a package. A well-lit entry with a clean, welcoming door tells the universe that you’re ready to receive.

Adding a light fixture near your door introduces the Fire element, which brings warmth, visibility, and a spark of positive energy to the space. And don’t forget to keep the area tidy. Sweep regularly and give your door a good wipe-down now and then. It’s like giving your energy a fresh start every day.

Your Living Room

Your living room is where the magic of connection happens. It’s where family hangs out, friends catch up, and memories are made. So, it’s important that this space feels warm, cozy, and welcoming for everyone who walks in.

Start by making sure you have plenty of comfy seating, enough for your household plus a few extra spots for guests. Arrange your chairs and sofas so they face each other. This setup naturally invites conversation and connection. Also, try to avoid placing seats with their backs directly to the door as it can make the energy (and people!) feel a little disconnected or uneasy.

Healthy green plants can also be a great addition to the living room, as they add vital life force energy and the wood element, which represents kindness and compassion.

Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is the heart of nourishment, not just for your meals, but for your energy too. It’s where you fuel your body and, by extension, your whole life. So, keeping this space clean and inviting is a simple but powerful way to boost your kitchen’s energy flow.

A great place to start? Your refrigerator! Take a little time to clear out anything expired or no longer serving you. Compost what you can, and give the fridge a good wipe-down inside and out. A tidy fridge isn’t just about hygiene. It creates a fresh, energized space where your body and mind can feel supported and cared for every time you open the door.

By clearing out clutter and making room for fresh, nourishing foods, you’re literally inviting positive energy and abundance to flow into your life — one healthy meal at a time.

Your Bathroom

Bathrooms can be a bit tricky in Feng Shui because of all the drains and water flow, which means they can sometimes feel like energy is draining away, too.

To help keep your energy (and your wealth!) from slipping down the drain, try to keep your bathroom door closed when it’s not in use, and always keep the toilet seat down. Since water in Feng Shui symbolizes the flow of money and abundance, these little habits help you hold onto your good energy and prevent it from leaking out of your life.

Your Bedroom

Your bedroom, especially your bed, is all about you. It’s your personal retreat, your space for rest, healing, and rejuvenation, so it’s a fantastic place to focus your Feng Shui energy.

Make sure your bed is in the commanding position: backed securely against a solid wall and placed where you can easily walk around it. This helps you feel safe and supported while you sleep.

One Feng Shui no-no? Storing clutter or random stuff under your bed. Ideally, keep this space clear so energy can flow freely and your rest isn’t disturbed. But if space is tight and you need to store things under there, keep it simple — only soft, bedroom-related items like extra blankets or sheets. You’d also want to have some space around your bed such that it’s easy to walk around it.
