Chi Manifestation Blog/Inner Feng Shui/Why Your Vision Board Is Not Working

Vision boards get a lot of mockery, and honestly some of it is earned.

You cut out a picture of a house. You stick it on the wall. You look at it while you brush your teeth. Six months later the house is still a picture, and you feel slightly silly for ever having believed.

So people quietly decide that visualisation is nonsense and get on with their lives.

Here is the problem with that conclusion.

The list of people who visualised their way into something enormous is long, and it is not made up of dreamers.

Three People Who Saw It First

Gabrielle Thomas typed one line into her phone 500 times. I will become Olympic champion. She ran the race in her head every morning before she ever ran it on a track. She now has three Olympic medals.

Jim Carrey wrote himself a cheque for ten million dollars, post-dated it, and kept it folded in his wallet for years while he was broke. Just before the date he had written on it, he landed Dumb and Dumber for very close to that amount.

Conor McGregor described his fight with Jose Aldo before it happened, right down to the left hand that would land. The fight lasted thirteen seconds. He walked out with his first UFC title, and later became the first man to hold two at once.

I could keep going for an hour. Athletes, founders, performers, people who built quiet ordinary lives they love.

That is not the interesting part.

The interesting part is that thousands of other people make the board, say the affirmations, feel the feelings, and get precisely nothing.

Same practice. Opposite results.

So the question was never whether visualisation works. The question is what the successful ones are doing that everybody else is leaving out.

There are two missing ingredients. Both are simple. Neither one is on the average vision board.

What the Vision Board Leaves Out

Mainstream advice gives you three instructions. Make a board. Add some affirmations. Feel the emotion of already having it.

None of that is wrong. It is just incomplete, in the same way that flour is not a cake.

What almost nobody tells you is that you also have to visualise two other things.

The identity you would have to step into in order to get that outcome.

And the actions you are going to take today to move towards it.

Leave those two out and something quietly unpleasant happens in your nervous system.

You show your mind a life that sits a long way from your current one. It looks at that life, looks at you, measures the distance between the two, and finds no bridge. No version of you capable of crossing it. No steps laid down in between.

What it produces is not motivation. It is resistance. A vague heaviness every time you glance at the board. Fear, wearing the costume of I will start properly next month.

That is why some people feel worse after visualising rather than better. They have been standing there staring at a gap.

Add the two missing ingredients and the gap turns into a route.

The Filter at the Base of Your Brain

Before the method, a short word on why any of this works, because I would rather you understood it than believed it.

At the base of your brain sits a small bundle of neurons called the reticular activating system. The RAS. Its job is simple and slightly brutal. It decides what you are allowed to notice.

Millions of bits of information hit your senses every second. You cannot possibly process all of it. So the RAS filters, and only what it has flagged as important is handed up to your awareness.

Try it now. Look around the room you are sitting in and find five red things. Take thirty seconds.

Done?

Now, without looking again, how many brown things did you see?

You have no idea. Brown was there the entire time. Brown was sitting in plain sight. You simply were not looking for brown, so your brain did not bother passing it along.

This is the mechanism underneath every lucky person you have ever quietly envied. They are not being handed more opportunities than you. They are noticing the ones that were already going past.

Visualisation, done properly, is you giving that filter a clear instruction. This matters to me. Flag it. Bring it to the front.

In Inner Feng Shui terms, this is where your chi gets its direction. Your life force energy is always moving, always being spent on something. The only real question is whether it has somewhere clear to point. Undirected, it leaks into worry, scrolling, and other people's priorities. Directed, it gathers.

Right. The method. Three steps, about ten minutes a day.

Step One: Visualise the Character, Not the Prize

Almost everyone starts with the prize. That is the wrong end of the thing.

Start with who you would have to be.

If you have been following along, you already built this character in The Identity Loop lesson. The version of you who has arrived at your Big Goal. If you skipped that exercise, go back and do it before you go any further, because the rest of this rests on it.

Settle into that person. Not the things they own. The way they operate.

How do they speak to themselves when something goes wrong? What do they do with a mistake, a rejection, a day that falls apart by ten in the morning? What do they believe about their own capability before there is any evidence for it? How do they carry stress in the body on a difficult Tuesday?

Spend two or three minutes being them before you look at anything they have.

This step does something the other two cannot. It closes the gap from the inside. You stop being a person staring at a distant life and become a person already living in the right character, who simply happens to be near the beginning of it.

The outcome stops feeling like a fantasy and starts feeling like a consequence.

One Piece of a Larger System

Training your attention decides what you notice. What surrounds you while you train it decides how much there is to notice in the first place.

This lesson handles one half of the work. The inner half. The identity underneath your goals, the filter deciding what reaches you, the direction your energy is pointed when nobody is watching.

There is an outer half doing just as much lifting. Your physical environment carries an energy of its own. When your home and your workspace are arranged correctly, they create the conditions for luck and opportunity to flow towards you. But when the inner state is misaligned, when beliefs are stuck and emotions are contracted and the self-talk runs against you, those opportunities arrive and slide straight past. Unnoticed, or quietly sabotaged. Lasting change needs both sides aligned, the space around you and the state within you.

That is what the Inner and Outer Feng Shui System was built for. It brings together over 5,000 years of ancient Chinese energetic wisdom and modern, science-backed psychology, developed by a second-generation Feng Shui master from Singapore and a certified psychotherapist and counsellor. Most programmes work on one side. This one works on both. Because one without the other only gets you halfway.

Step Two: Visualise the Goal Until You Can Smell It

Now the outcome. And here, specificity is the whole game, because your nervous system has no idea what a number feels like.

You should already have a Big Goal from the 7 Levels of Why exercise. Bring it up, and then refuse to leave it as a headline.

Say the goal is an online business making fifteen thousand a month, working few hours, from anywhere you like.

Where are you, exactly? If you are at home, which room? Who else is in it? If your kids are there, what are they actually doing, playing with their toys, or with the dog? Are you on the floor with them? Hear the laughter. Notice what that does to your chest.

Then you open the laptop. You log in to check the day's sales. What is the number you want to see sitting on that screen? Look at it. What happens in your body when you read it?

Bring in more than one sense. See it, hear it, feel the temperature of the room, smell the coffee, taste it. Every extra sense you involve makes the scene land harder, because your brain does not file a rich sensory scene as a hypothetical. It stores it much closer to a memory.

That is the point. You are not wishing. You are letting yourself experience, for ninety seconds, how good it will feel to have followed through. And that feeling is what your chi organises itself around for the rest of the day.

The more vivid the vision, the more real it feels. The more real it feels, the more you want to go and get it.

Which brings us to the step everyone skips.

Step Three: Visualise Today's Actions

This is the bridge, and it is the reason most vision boards collect dust.

Once you have spent a few minutes in the finished picture, come back to today and choose the actions that move you towards it. The action-based goals you set earlier. Then rehearse yourself doing them.

Not vaguely. In the same detail you gave the dream.

Where will you be sitting? What time on the clock? Who is around? What exactly are you doing in the first ninety seconds after you begin, because starting is the part that hurts. How do you feel when it is finished? What do you do straight afterwards?

We avoid our most important actions for one of two reasons. They sit outside the comfort zone, or they carry some consequence that frightens us. A mental rehearsal takes the sting out of both. By the time you sit down to do the real thing, some part of you has been here before and did not die.

One detail matters more than the rest. As you rehearse, see yourself enjoying it. Tag the action with something pleasant, the quiet of the early morning, the music you put on, the satisfaction of watching the thing take shape. If you genuinely cannot find enjoyment in it, then picture yourself feeling proud afterwards for having done it on a day you did not feel like it.

That small act of tagging is what dissolves resistance before it arrives. You are pre-loading the pleasure side of the scale.

Your Turn: Ten Minutes Tomorrow Morning

Do this before you touch your phone. That timing is not decoration. Whatever your filter is given first tends to shape everything it catches for the rest of the day.

One. Sit somewhere quiet and close your eyes. Two slow breaths, out longer than in, until the body settles.

Two. Step into the character. Three minutes. How they think, how they speak to themselves, how they hold a setback. Be them before you have anything they have.

Three. Step into the Big Goal, already achieved. Four minutes. Build the scene with at least three senses. Stay in it long enough to feel the emotion arrive, because the emotion is the instruction.

Four. Come back to today and pick one to three actions. Write them down on paper where you can see them.

Five. Rehearse each one. Three minutes. Time, place, first move, finishing feeling. Attach enjoyment, or attach pride.

Six. Open your eyes and do the first action within the hour if you possibly can, while the rehearsal is still warm.

Do that for fourteen days before you judge it. Somewhere in the second week you will notice something odd. A conversation that seems weirdly relevant. An article that lands at the right moment. A person who turns out to know exactly the thing you needed.

That is not the universe making an exception for you. That is brown things, finally getting through the filter.

The Takeaway

Visualisation is not a wish. It is a set of instructions for the part of your brain that decides what you get to see.

Give it only the prize and it shows you a gap. Give it the character, the prize, and the steps, and it shows you a path, then quietly starts pointing out everything on that path you would otherwise have walked straight past.

Ten minutes. Tomorrow morning. Before the phone.

You are not chasing luck. You are learning to notice it.

See you in the next one.
